merged field cuts data off at ~255 characters

I'm merging an Excel spreadsheet with 6 fields into a Word document. for one
of the fields (the only one where the data is longer than a few words) cuts
the data off at ~255 characters, so only half the data from that field
merges into the Word 2002 doc.

Has anybody heard of this, or have any suggestions to offer?

It is certainly worth trying changing the way Word connects to this Excel
data source to DDE (the old method used by default in Word 200) - in Word,
check Tools|Options|General|"Confirm conversions at open", go through the
connection process again, and choose the DDE option (or any of the other
Excel ones for that matter) when prompted.
