Yes.
Basically, create your checkbox, than right-click the
checkbox and choose format control...
Under the Control tab where it says "Cell Link" type in
the cell reference(make it absolute if necessary) or click
on the cell that you want, then click OK. As soon as you
do this the cell that it is linked to will say false. If
you type the number 1 over that word False or any other
number besides zero in that cell it will check the box. 0
will uncheck it. I'm not sure if that answers your
question about your mergefield, but it should give you an
idea on where to go from here.
