Merging 2 columns into 1 and converting to other cases?

G

GottaRun

Hi there,

A few questions:
1) how to convert a column [or row] of data into upper case?

2) how to merge two columns of names into 1 column where a space
separates the two names

3) how to convert the names in a column to mixed case, that is, the
first letter of a name is in upper case, the remainder lower-case? Hmm
how to work with names like McCain or O'Hanlon, or Smith-Jones?

Would a book like 'excel for dunmmies' help here, or please recommend
your gav book.

Thanks for the assist. I hope I can help others soon too!

Hi

See reply to first 2 items in your original thread.

Take a look at the Proper() function
=PROPER(A1)

It will turn govier or GOVIER into Govier.
Can't think of a solution for the McCain bit right now, and have to log
off for a while.

1) Many methods. Try this article to see the different methods available:
http://www.officearticles.com/excel/change_the_case_of_text_in_cells_in_microsoft_excel.htm

2) In a 3rd column, and assuming your names are in columns A and B, use
=A2&" "&B2. Don't forget to convert your new column to values (select the
cells with the new formulas, hit Copy, hit Edit-->Paste special-->Values).

3) That's called "proper" case. However, working withe McCain's and such is
best done manually. When you sort, it's easy to find those kinds of names
quickly.

Hope it helps!
