Merging an enterprise account with a local account for the same person

The MSProject Server 2002 book describes how to do this, I believe.
Save the file, create a dummy enterprise user, delete the project from
the server, re-import the file mapping one of the accounts to the dummy
and the other to the user's enterprise account, then merge the dummy
into the user.

My question: Could you import to a similarly named project, before you
delete the original, make sure it works, and then delete the old and
publish the new?
