How do I merge a currency value from an Excel database
into a word document and retain the dollar sign, the
comma separation, and the 0s to the right of the decimal?

I had the same issue. Several months ago I was able to
find instruction to correct the problem but have since
thrown them away and have had the problem occur again.
You have to change the excel sheet to a DDE, whatever that
is, but I don't remember how I did it before.

You have to change the excel sheet to a DDE, whatever that
is, but I don't remember how I did it before.

You can change the connection method to DDE
- in Word 2000 or earlier by checking the "select method" box in the Open
Data Source dialog box and selecting the DDE option when offered,
- in Word 2002 or later by checking Word Tools|Options|General|"Confirm
conversion at open", then re-establishing the connection to your data
source. Again, you will be prompted for the type of connection and you can
choose the one that mentions DDE.

DDE is "Dynamic Data Exchange" and was an early standard Microsoft method
for transferring data between programs.
