Merging repeated numbers by group and adding

Hi

I have a repeating table in a monthly report. The table contains performance
indicators comprising a description (read only) and a bunch of real numbers.

I want to be able to merge the reports and add the numbers for a given
description.

I set out by
1. changing the merge settings on the table to 'Combine groups with the same
field value' (being the description field, then
2. trying to change the merge settings for the number controls to add the
contents of the controls.

At step 2 I get a message that 'The merge action cannot be completed because
no additional merge actions are available for the data type of this field

To merge data in this field change the data type...'

Can anyone help me to do what I'm trying to achieve. If necessary I can
specify the data fields explitly rather than in a repeating table but this
would be cumbersome and ugly
