Message doesn't close after Send pushed

When I try to send an email with an attachment from another application such
as Word or Excel my email doesn't close after it is sent. When I click on the
'Send' button the email is sent, ( I know it has been received by the users)
but the message remains displayed on the screen until I manually close it.

Is there a setting somewhere that I haven't been able to find that needs to
be adjusted?

I'm hoping someone here can help. I have found references to this on other
sites but the question is never resolved.
