"Message interface has returned an unknown error" message. Why?

When I try to delete a message from Outlook, or update a contact and save, I
get the message "The message inerface has eturned an unknown error. If the
problem persists, restart Outlook". I've not only restarted, but I've removed
Office and re-installed it with no change. I've restored my computer to July
and nothing improved. I also cannot send or receive. My next step is to
restore to factory conditions and start over completely, but I'm not sure
that will fix the Outlook problem. Any ideas out there?

You don't mention what version of Outlook you are using, but I would try two
things to start.

1) If you are working with a POP3/IMAP account, try running the inbox repair
tool (scanpst.exe) against your pst file(s)

2) How big are the PST file(s)? Reason I ask is that Outlook 97/2002 have
file and item count limits. Perhaps you have reached the limits. (Note:
Outlook 2003/2007 can use PST file from earlier versions and it would have
the same file/count limits. These two versions can create a newer PST file
format that extends these limits.)

Item count/file size limits are 65,536 items per folder and the PST file
can't grow beyond 2GB (or 1.92 give or take when looking in Windows
Explorer).
