Message Recall

I received a question from one of my users the other day about how long it
takes for the message recall function to work in Outlook 2003. I had never
really looked into this before, but it looks like this is not an immediate
action and can actually take 3 - 4 minute to remove the message from the
recipients inbox as long as they have Outlook open.

Is message recall supposed to take this much time, or is there some other
issue at play here?

Thanks.

Thanks, but I have already read this. I am actually looking for more
technical information regarding timing.

I read read read about this action button but I DO NOT see it

And where were you looking? Did you open the Sent Items folder, select the
message you wished to recall, then open that message and click the Actions
menu in the message's menu bar? Are you using Exchange? Did the recipient
read the message already?

There is no timing. It can take moments or it can take days or it may never
happen. it all depends on 1) both the sender and recipient using the same
Exchange server and 2) the recipient opening the recall notice BEFORE opening
the message to be recalled. If you send me a message and then recall it, if I
never open the recall notice or I open the first message before I see the
recall notice, it will never happen. If I wait ten days before opening the
recall notice and I have not yet opened the original item, then the recall
will have taken ten days to occur.

If you are just using Outlook for internet email and not connecting to a
Microsoft Exchange server you won't see it.

Really, that article is going to tell you exactly what you need to know. In
the "Will my recall be successful?" section it describes all the factors
that are involved regarding whether or not it will be successful. For
example if the recipient's Outlook isn't open, it won't recall until it is.
Once it's opened it won't recall unless the "Process requests and responses
on arrival" option is selected in the Tracking Options. If they already
read the message before getting the recall, it won't recall anyway (they'll
just get a notification that you want to). If the recipient isn't using
Microsoft Exchange it won't recall either.

thanks, I was under the impression I was but I guess Im not. Im on an
Intranet system and everyone uses the same email for the company but I dont
know. Would it be easy to see? Or would I have to dig a little?

Yes, it takes a few minutes - when I timed it, up to 2 min, but it could be
slower on a busy system. It basically needs to wait for some idle time to
process. It should be almost as speedy as processing is for read receipts
and meeting requests.
