Message received on Office Standard

My daughter in college lost her Office Standard CD. We
replaced her CD-drive with a CD-burner over the summer
and she gets a message about a significant change in
computer configuration. To fix the problem, the computer
wants the original CD which we don't have. Since we
don't have the old software, do I have to buy a full
version and somehow reinstall the whole thing or can I
just buy one of the 2003 upgrades?

Major problem with buying an upgrade - it's alright NOW, whilst the original
software is on the HDD, but if you come to re-format and re-install, (which
you will!) the upgrade CD will want a qualifying product to allow the
upgrade to install, so at some point you are going to have to buy SOMETHING,
whether it just be a cheap copy of Smartsuite, or Works or whatever.

uh, oh. I may have replied incorrectly. Thanks for your
help. The computer has a 2 year old version of XP
standard on it. Can I get by with a full verison of
Teacher/Student 2003. I know I can't upgrade it in the
future, but it sure is cheaper.
