Message saying "file not saved" when i try to save an open excel .

I have been working on an excel file, but when I try to save it (by
overwriting the xeisting file of the same name) it asks me to allow
overwriting (I agree) and then tells me "File not saved". I have tried
re-neming the file as something else ... or saving to different directory ...
but again it says "file not saved"

What should I do .. and why is this happening?
