Message stuck in outbox

Using outlook 2007 on vista sp2
My outllok normally works fine when I am in most places
However we are staying for a couple of weeks in Belgium with a friend
and we are using her www.telenet.be internet connection
Whilst I can get internet fine and receive mail
Whenever I try to send email using my normal smtp settings, I get
"error (0x80042109) outlook cannot connect to your outgoing smtp
server"

I've looked at all the previous posts on this and the faq but none
seem to address this problem

I am not trying to delete my messages, I simply want to send them

Please advise

I know it's really bad form to answer your own message but I found a
solution

My isp for my email accounts is 1and1.co.uk
someone suggested changing my smtp port to 587
voila, I di and now the blockage is cleared

(I'm still waiting for my vista laptop to finish enabling telnet
client to check as was suggested that port 25 is ok)

I use 1and1 on a different ISP - I just authenticate the SMTP server - no
need to change ports at all.

I do too
But in more settings/advanced/ I was advised by 1+1 quite some time
ago to name port 25 as well

With authentication and port 25 specified, mail could not be sent with
the belgium isp
