Messages after upgrading from Word 97 to 2002

I recently upgraded my Microsoft Word 97 to 2002 (through Works Suite 2004). Now I’m getting all kinds of messages. Operating system XP Pro.

?A) I get this message whenever I open a document in Word 2002:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\STARTUP\PDFWriter97.dot
contains macros.

Macros may contain viruses. It is always safe to disable macros, but if the macros are legitimate, you might lose some functionality.

?B) If I choose Disable I get the following message:

The Create Adobe PDF monitor cannot be found. Please reinstall Create Adobe PDF.

A) I don’t use macros and hardly know what they are.
B) I’m only opening a document, what’s all this project and host application stuff.
C) Do I need Create Adobe PDF and how do I get it.
D) What’s Dictation.dot? I didn’t open it or make changes

I’m ready to go back to Word 97. Word 2002 is a pain in the someplace and takes forever to open. Can anybody help me. The above HELPS were helpless and Word 2002 Help was no better. All this stuff about adding macros, projects and certificates. Just let me save letters, documents and lists please.

The issues here, including the slow start-up are attributable to an
assortment of add-ins that you had installed with Word 97 and without
upgrading the applications that installed the add-ins it is likely that some
or all of them will not work with the new version of Word.

The warning that the add-in contains macros is normal if you don't set
Word's security to trust all installed templates and add-ins, but the
PDFWriter97.dot seems a likely candidate for not working anyway and so you
should start by moving that file from the indicated folder. Whether you need
the functionality that PDFWriter97 provided depends on whether you want to
create PDF format files. If you do there are alternative options linked from
the favoiurites page of my web site.

Dictation.dot is another add-in. If you don't know what it does, then you
don't need that one either, so remove it from its startup location also. It
will either be in the same folder as the other one, or the Word startup
folder (which is defined in tools > options > file locations > startup).

Uninstall the Works addin for Word - instructions in the web page

just one of the problems that add-in causes, and if you are running Norton
AV, uncheck its office plug-in option.
