Messages being sent do not appear in the Outbox: why?

The bottom right hand corner of the screen tells me that 1 of three messages
is being sent. Normally such messages are listed in the Outbox. This time,
however, there appears to be nothing in my Outbox. This has now been going on
for a couple of hours, and I no longer know what those messages are (other
messages have been successfully sent during this time). How can I find out
what these messages are?
