Messages composed in HTML received as plain text

I need help with this. I am composing messages in HTML,
am NOT using Word as my e-mail editor (changed this due
to paragraph spacing issued in messages), and have
changed my font for composing messages to Comic Sans 11
pt Italic. Recipients (including e-mails sent to myself)
are receiving messages in plain text format. What am I
doing wrong? I have literally spent hours trying to
figure out why this is happening!!

TIA for any advice out there.
