Messages in Outlook folder disappeared ?

[Lost in Outlook]

I run Outlook 2007 on Vista. Have set up a number of subfolders under my
inbox folder and set rules to move sepcific messages to specific folders.
Been working fine, today however, when I opened my folder named purchases, it
was empty. I had messages in there for a long time and they are important to
me.
I checked the deleted file foler - not in there. I checked - not set to
automatically Archive. I checked my archive folder not in there. Can anyone
suggest what has happened to my messages? How do I prevent this from
re-occuring? Too important stuff to loose like this.

What view are you using on the folder? Can you find the messages if you use
Search?

And, you have 'important stuff' but apparently no backup - not that
