I am using Outlook 2003 on an XP-Pro machine with all service packs and
updates.
I have run into this issue where e-mail messages sent to recipients in two
domains are never received. The domains are earthlink.net and indy.net [a
domain that is operated by Earthlink].
My ISP is Earthlink, and my e-mail account is an indy.net account with an
indy.net POP server and an earthlink.net SMTP server.
I first discovered this problem when we would send e-mail messages with our
own indy.net address in the cc field so that we would have a copy of some
messages [we were not having messages sent to the Sent Items folder]. The
messages were received by their intended recipients, but we never received
the ones with our indy.net address in the cc field. I tested over and over
again by putting our indy.net address in the To, cc, and bcc fields, and we
never received these messages.
Shortly thereafter we learned that addressees with earthlink.net domains
were not receiving messages sent to them. We sent a message to three
earthlink.net addressees [friends], one indy.net addressee [daughter], our
own indy.net address, and a hotmail address that I have. The only account
that received this test e-mail was the hotmail address. That confirmed the
message was being sent out and received by domains outside earthlink and
indy.net, and not received by earthlink and indy.net.
Strangely, messages generated by the "Test Settings" button in Outlook's
account setup feature are received in Outlook.
I installed and set up Windows Live Mail with my indy.net account as the
primary account, just like in Outlook, with all the same settings. I then
sent a message to my indy.net account and my hotmail account from Windows
Live Mail. This test message was received in Live Mail and in Outlook. It
was also received by the hotmail account.
I used Earthlink's web mail application to send a test message to my
indy.net account and hotmail account. It was received in both Live Mail and
Outlook as well as hotmail.
Messages sent from Outlook to indy.net never show up in the Earthlink web
mail application. Messages sent from Live Mail to indy.net do show up in the
Earthlink web mail application.
I deleted the indy.net account in Outlook and re-established it with its
original settings. I sent a message to my indy.net account through Outlook,
and it was receieved. I sent another message, and it was not received, nor
were any other test messages sent subsequently. I deleted and re-established
the indy.net account in Outlook again, the same pattern resulted - first
message was sent and received, no others were received. I always added the
hotmail account as an addressee - and the messages were always received by
hotmail.
I do not have any message rules set up. My Indy.net address is on both the
safe sender's and safe recipient's lists. I can't think of any reason why
the messages are being sent by Outlook, but not received if they are sent to
an earthlink.net or indy.net domain.
I contacted Earthlink, but it was their belief that since I could use their
web-mail application to send and receive messages appropriately that the
problem must be with Outlook.
Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
