Messages sent in plain text show as foreign characters in outbox

We have a client using Outlook 2003 - whenever he composes a message in
Plain Text (or replies to a message received in Plain Text) the recipient
will see his message as just a bunch of question marks.
If you look at an outgoing message on client's machine in the Outbox before
it is sent it is showing as (I think) Japanese characters - certainly not the
plain English which he entered.
So somehow the plain text setting has been over-ridden and Outlook thinks it
should send the message in Japanese ??! We can find nothing to over-ride this
...... can anyone help us please?
The final clue to this mystery is that the client has just returned from
Japan where he was using his machine on hotel and public Wi Fi networks.

If the client is using Bullguard, this is the explanation:
Bullguard Live Support advised me to switch of Spamfilter
as there is a bug in the latest update last week.

Tadjio - thanks so much for responding. Yes the client is using Bullguard ...
unfortunately we had to do a system restore which fixed the problem ... but
maybe only until Bullguard notices he needs an update! At least we'll be
ready for it this time.

Glad to help.
Yes, another update will probably cause it to go wrong again
until Bullguard come out with a fix...
