Messages staying on the server.

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: pop My mail account has an option set to delete messages from the server after downloading, but they're staying out there.

The downloaded message does include a line saying that the message is still on the server, and a single click will delete it, but I thought that having that option set would make it happen automatically.

Am I expecting too much?

That's typically a POP server issue.
I know gMail does that too for instance.
Not much that can be done about it I'm afraid :-\

Being brand new to the Mac world, I probably shouldn't say this, but from my
experience, Windows XP and Vista doesn't seem to have this problem with POP
servers. Does this mean we should try to rattle some cages over this or do we
just live with it?

My ISP told me it's a POP server issue -- that POP servers don't always
delete the message when you click on the "delete message from server at next
connection." I guess that might mean that it's a weakness in the protocol or
the way it gets implemented -- I have no clue. But my ISP did not suggest it
was platform dependent.

I'm curious what your ISP would say.

My bad. I just checked my daughter's Vista machine, and it has the same
problem.

I have "Leave messages on the server" unchecked, and the messages move to
the Deleted folder instead of getting emptied. I don't suppose there's an
automatic "empty" feature like the one for junk mail. Will it eventually
clog up the works if we don't empty the Deleted folder? It really shouldn't
be the user's responsibility to do server housekeeping.

Am I being naive to expect a fix for this?

It's a server-side issue. I had that with one of my accounts and hated
it. The ISP eventually migrated to a different solution and the problem
went away,
