messed-up fonts in .PDF imported into Word

I have found that .PDF files created by e.g. TeXShop (which uses Computer Modern fonts, embedded in the output .PDF file) do not import correctly into Word -- some weird font substitution happens. The .PDFs I am trying to import are perfectly readable in Preview, Adobe Reader, etc. What gives? How to fix?

I suspect that the problem is that you do not have the fonts required
installed on the Mac.

Mac OS X does not support any kind of font embedding: you either have the
fonts on the machine, or they won't work.

You could add the fonts to the PDF as attachments, but you would still have
to install them on the target Mac. Some (most, these days?) fonts are
locked by their creators to prevent any kind of embedding.

Hope this helps

I don't know that it will help, but if you go to Word | Preferences |
Compatibility, and click on font substitution, you might be able to
control the substitution in a way that suits you better.

I'm curious about what you mean by "import"--are you inserting pictures
in PDF format into the Word doc, or converting the files to editable
Word docs?
