Messed up help screen in VBA

G

George Thompson

Hi everyone,

My VBA help screen is messed up and I don't know what to
do to fix this. I even reinstalled Office 2000 SR1 and
this did not fix the problem.

The problem is that the links displayed at the top of the
Help screen (like Examples, Methods, Properties, etc.) are
all gone. I only see boxes with no text. Clicking on the
box does nothing.

I have tried to start Word using the RUN WINWORD /A method
and still no go.

Help!!!

Thanks,

George

Hi George,

I had a similar problem last year, and here's what fellow MVP Pete Lees had
to say about it:

The chances are that you have a registry problem: the registry entries for
the HTML Help ActiveX control are broken. A number of the security patches
and service packs that Microsoft released last year are known to cause this
problem, including the cumulative security patches for Internet Explorer and
service pack 4 (SP4) for Windows 2000.

The problem is described in Knowledge Base article 822989 and, in most
cases, installing Critical Update 811630 should sort it out.

822989: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822989
811630: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811630

The exception to this is Windows 2000 with SP4 installed. In this case you
must unregister the ActiveX control and then re-register it, by running the
following two commands from a command prompt:

regsvr32 /u <drive>:\winnt\system32\hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 <drive>:\winnt\system32\hhctrl.ocx

The 811630 did the trick for me!

Gean-Guy,

Thanks, this is probably what the problem is. I recently
did the upgrade to W2K SP4 (and a few other minor
upgrades) and I think that problem started after that.

Everyone in our tech support area thinks that I'm nuts.

Thanks again,

George
