META: Newsgroup Sync?

E

Erik Sojka

Sorry for the pseudo off-topic...

I access these newsgroups through two different web
interfaces, and also through a native NNTP client at home.

In recent days I've noticed that the three different
lists of the messages do not seem to be in sync.
Messages from one web interface never appear in the other
one (even after a few days have passed) and vice versa.
the same applies to some posts in the NNTP list of
articles not appearing in either web interface.

Anyone else notice this?

This depends on what server you use to view this newsgroup. I use
msnews.microsoft.com and if I used the one from my provider I would be to
slow to ever answer a question first :)

My NNTP config points to msnews.microsoft.com. The real disparity is
between messages on the old and new web interfaces.

I hadn't noticed it (especially since lately I only access the groups
through my laptop) but it doesn't surprise me. There is probably multiple
servers involed and some replication that has to happen between them.
Historically it hasn't been unusual that the servers weren't perfectly
in sync.

I'd guess that it is more than normal (and expected) sync delays. there
are a lot of messages on the "new" Passport-enabled web interface than
are on the old web interface and on the MS.Public NNTP servers.

Anyone out there from MS want more details to look into it?

every group I checked is running to within 10 min of sync - a 5 min sync is
expected and 10 min is within normal... all the ones I checked were synced
on older messages.

I forwarded your message to MS Newsgroup administration so we'll see what
comes out of it.
