meta tags

I have seen sites that use tons of different meta tags. Can anyone tell me
the ones to use. I don't want to harm my site by either using not enough or
too few. I know the title, description and keywords are very important.
I've searched for days, but can't seem to find the correct format or how
many to use. Here is some I've found from other sites and wonder if I
should be using these too.
This site comes up #1, so I wonder if these are all neccessary? I don't want
to copy hers, but just curious about all these meta tags.

The description and keywords are used by search site bots to catalogue a
site. Content language and type are also good meta tags. Robots is not a bad
meta, but not all obey your desires (having a robots.txt file is also wise,
but the same applied). The majority of the rest of her tags are true
metadata information. If you wish to fully document your files, they are
fine, but are a lot of overhead for most sites.

Hi Lisa,
Actually the only ones that count are title and description, keywords are
ignored. All those other meta tags won't help ranking in any way, in fact
they may well hurt as it makes it harder for the spider to get to the meat
of your page - ie the stuff between <body></body>

I'd imagine there isn't much competition on the keywords this site is
targetting so it's going to be easy for her to rank #1. Is she a competitor
of yours? If so it should be easy to study her site and make yours a little
bit better. Basically what you want is a page that looks like this

<title>Your Keywords</title>
<meta name="description" content="Your keywords then a 15 word sales pitch">
</head>
<body>
<h1>Your keywords</h1>
<p>Your keywords.......

This kind of structure gets your keywords in all the right places and gives
the spiders a well structered page that's easy to crawl

Thanks for the information on what is needed in meta tags. Yes, this person
is my competitor.
So I only need the few meta tags below. I see you have h1 tag, do I putIn
front of my keywords? I've never heard of that.

Hi Lisa,

H1 is a top level heading, in Design View type your heading at the top of
the page highlight it and in the styles dropdown chose heading 1. There's 6
headings, 1-6. It's important to structure your page with headings
containing your keywords. So you might have
<h1>Horses</h1>
<p>Horses......
<h2>Big Horses</h2>
<p>Big horses......
<h3>Big White Horses</h3>
<p>Big White Horses......
<h3>Big Black Horses</h3>
<p>Big Black Horses......

Simple example but hopefully you can see what I mean - looking at your
competitors site this is one thing she gets wrong so it's going to help you
to do this right.

Thanks Jon,
I never learned that in FP about the headings.
Sounds great. I'll go work on that now.
So do I need to even have that doc type etc. at the top of my pages that
everyone is using?

OK, I just gave it a try.
Here's what I've done. In the middle of the page where I start my first
paragraph, the whole thing is considered h2. That's probably not right.
I tried to highlight just a word or two, but it all shows up .
