MFC Application

I am having problems with word 2003. I have had Microsoft Office 2003 since I installed XP Pro about 3 years ago with no problems did one clean install last year everything was good until last month & for no reason nothing worked right like a virus of some kind.
None of the files open by themselves, I have to right-click and select Word or WordPad or something new called WordPad MFC Application. If I just select it the file opens in WordPad. Also the icons do not change into the W of Word.
They used to work, I could open several at the same time before but not now & the files are different there is no selection for the file showing folders in the file, you have to double-click the folder to see what is in it. You cannot rename any of the files it is not on the menu anymore.
I have done all the cleaning SpyBot Adaware, AVG, etc.
Nothing works I even left this at one Word Newsgroups and no one could help they agreed that WordPad MFC Application has something to do with it.
Any ideas I am also running XP Pro SP2

"WordPad MFC Application" is exactly the same thing as "WordPad". It comes
with Windows, and it is _not_ "something new" -- see
http://www.file.net/process/wordpad.exe.html. You should find the file
wordpad.exe in the folder C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories. If you
right-click it and select Properties and then the Version tab, you'll see
that "WordPad MFC Application" is the program's description string. There is
_nothing_ unusual about WordPad. (By the way, "MFC" is the abbreviation for
"Microsoft Foundation Classes", a programming environment that preceded the
..Net Framework.)

What has happened is that the association in the registry between the .doc
extension and the Word program is messed up or missing. Because WordPad
always has the same association, and now Word can't grab it first, the
document opens in WordPad instead.

The fix is to restore Word's association. The simplest way to do that is to
open Start > Run and enter the command

winword.exe /r

to tell Word to restore its registry settings (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm).

I can't make any sense of your other statement about "the files are
different there is no selection for the file showing folders in the file,
you have to double-click the folder to see what is in it. You cannot rename
any of the files it is not on the menu anymore." Can you describe more
exactly what you see, or what you don't see that you think should be there?

I didn't understand it when I typed it that's why I hoped you would
When the folder is shown in the left side of explorer window it will have the plus sign beside it and if you click it you will see what is in the folder... that doesn't do it you have to double-click on the icon on the right side of screen to see what is in it.
The icons will not go back to the word icon.
When you right-click a document it never came up WordPad MFC Application before just WordPad Now it is both.
I was told it could be a virus or worm...could that be & I am not catching it with what I run.

Reregistering Word should restore the file association. If it doesn't also
restore the icon, you can do that through Windows Explorer as well.

I think there are two or maybe three separate problems. They may have
the same or different causes.

The first issue is documents not having the right icon and opening in
WordPad instead of Word. That's almost certainly the registration
problem that Suzanne and I have discussed already.

The second issue, not being able to expand the folder icons in the
left pane of Explorer, probably isn't related to Word at all. There's
nothing about the registration of Word that can affect that, unless
there's something else that causes both problems. I don't think you'll
get a good solution here in the Word newsgroups; you should ask in a
Windows group.

The possible third issue has to do with seeing both "WordPad" and
"WordPad MFC Application" in the right-click menu. That could be
caused by a simple foulup in the registry, or it could be caused by a
virus/worm/Trojan horse masquerading as WordPad MFC Application. The
web page I mentioned before does say that such things have been seen.
I would think that the combination of detection programs you mentioned
should find the nasty if there is one, but no detector is perfect.

You could try using HijackThis, which is not so much an antivirus
program as an "everything scanner". Go to http://www.castlecops.com/
and download HijackThis from the link in the left pane, follow the
instructions to do the scan, and post the resulting log on that site
to have the experts look at it. In your post, describe exactly
step-by-step how to reproduce the problem you're seeing, and ask
whether the scan shows something wrong on your system.
