Microphone Input problem in Chat

J

Jack Perry

I have Vista ultimate on both my desktop and tablet.
Using a headset microphone on the table, when I use the Audio Wizard in chat
everything works fine. I speak and the display in the wizard shows it is
hearing.

On the desktop when I use the Wizard and get to the same screen, there is no
indication that the wizard hears mne.

Other input from this headset microphone work fine. Speech recognition and
setting up the microphone in the Multimedia Control Panel program.

I cannot think of any other check I can make unless (and I just thought of
this) the fact that I do not have a wireless card in my desktop computer is
involved.

All help would be appreciated

For completeness, are you using Microsoft Office Groove 2007? (Since you are
getting the Audio Wizard to run, I'm going to assume so. Earlier versions of
Groove don't work with the audio support included in Vista.)

Have you tried recording sound directly from Sound Recorder? This should use
the same components as Groove does. To start the utility, click Start, click
All Programs, click Accessories, and then click Sound Recorder. Let me know
if a recording from there works or not.

I am using Groove 2007.
I have used sound recorder and it works fine (Just tested it again).
I am also using Speech Recognition and it works fine also.

In the Grove Audio Wizard I am able to hear sounds through the headphones
when in the "adjust speaker Volume" dialog, but still no indication that the
Microphone is working when in the wizard's "Adjust Microphone dialog".

[Summary of problem: Groove 2007, Windows Vista Groove chat can play sound
but not record it. Sound Recorder utility works.]

This reply is going to be speculative, because I am not in the office, and
do not have access to a Windows Vista system today. Rather than keep you
waiting until next week, I thought I'd share some ideas.

The technote at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922154/en-us describes a
different (more common!) problem, but has information on how Groove audio
features work, going into more detail for 3.1. As I understand it, Groove
2007 is the same except for using the Microsoft GSM 6.10 codec in Windows
Vista. Although the TrueSpeech codec is not included with Vista, it can be
manually installed. I wonder if Groove might have problems if the TrueSpeech
codec is available in Vista? Or partially work if the TrueSpeech codec is
available, and the GSM one corrupted or missing?

You can get a nice, readable list of the audio codecs installed on your
system from Windows Media Player. Click on the Help menu (or right-click on
the toolbar and click Help) and then click "About Windows Media Player." On
the About Windows Media Player dialog box, click "Technical Support
Information", and then scroll down to "Audio Codecs." Since you have a system
that works and one that doesn't, you can compare lists.

Let me know if this shows anything worth pursuing. I can try things on a
Vista system on Monday.

I checked the Codecs and have the same set on both my laptop and my desktop.
Only difference in the lists is that Messenger Audio CODEC is ahead of the
Sipro Lab Telecom ACELP.net audio codec on my laptop, and the Spiro is ahead
of Messenger on my desktop. They are in positions 8 and 9 on each computer
in case the order of codecs is important.
Testing with a coworker we determined that, with her on a desktop and me on
my laptop, she could hear me in Chat but I could not hear her. She has Vista
also. As soon as we can we will be checking her Codecs to see how they
compare. She will also be installing Groove on her laptop and we will check
that out.
Thanks for the help.
