microphone volume

Hi...I have an Acer laptop with a microphone in the desktop...when I record
anything the volume is very low and I am so far unable to increase it to an
audible level. I have attempted to increase the volume with all the
options/settings etc I can find in both the sound recorder and the volume
control. The same occurrs with an external microphone. Ideas please?
