Due to some new security requirements from our security folks, it's bben
requested that we secure any files that hold confidential info. Hence, we are
faced with placing a Microsoft Access database on a network drive inside a
folder secured using the Microsoft EFS.
We've gotten this to work with non-Access files (Word & text files). The
server is running Windows Server 2003, fully patched, thank you very much.
Even though we've added the user (AD supplied certificate) to the Access
database EFS permissions, the user gets one of two errors, depending on
whether they try to open the file through Access or just double click on the
file.
They are:
"Microsoft Office Access can't find the database file "<path to file on
network drive>"
or
"The Microsoft Jet databas engine cannot open the file "<path to file on
network drive>. If it already opened exclusively by another user, or you need
permission to view its data".
Of course, the NTFS permissions and EFS permissions agree. And, we're using
the standard Access security, ie. we haven't set up any workgroup access.
Is it not possible to secure an Access database on a network drive using
EFS? Are we missing something? I have found one other thread out there
documenting the same symptoms, but haven't seen any more info than that
either saying it a known problem or not.
