"Microsoft Entourage has encounted a problem"

R

Richard

For the past two days when I have attempted to start Entourage I get
an error message:

"Microsoft Entourage has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience.. . . . . Please tell Microsoft about
this problem. We have created an error report that you can send to
help us improve Microsoft Entourage."

After I send the error report and receive confirmation that it's been
sent, I am invited to "Restart Microsoft Entourage" but when I do the
above error message appears. This cycle has now been repeated about
20 times over the past two days.

I'm using a Mac G3, 400MHz, PowerPC, with Mac OSX 10.4.9 and a cable
connection to the internet. I installed Microsoft Office 2004 with
Entourage and Word about a year ago .

BTW, I'm having the same trouble with Microsoft Word. Both Entourage
and Word were working perfectly until two days ago. My internet
connection and other programs are ok. There's been nothing unusual
occurring with my computer until Entourage and Word starting sending
error messages.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Test in a new User to eliminate problems in your User¹s folder. In System
Preferences create a new User. Log out/in to the new user and see if
Entourage and Word will launch there. If you have problems in the new User.
it¹s a system wide problem.

For system wide solution, apply the Apple Combo updater. Doing so overwrites
potentially problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed
some odd problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will
install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a
clean install.

If the problem does not occur in the new User this indicates your User¹s
folder. You will need to test for a bad preference.

Let me know what you find.

Diane Ross,

Many thanks for your response of Jun 6, 3:08 pm (see below) to my
complaint about not being able to access either Entourage or Word.

I followed all your suggestions but the problem persists.

I set up a second user as you suggested, logged out and then back in
as the 2nd user, but I get the same error messages when I attempt to
access either Entourage or Word.

I then downloaded Apple Combo updater at
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/combo.html>. But I still
get the same error messages, either as the original user or as the
second user.

I note that "CyberTaz" has responded to my post on
<microsoft.public.mac.office.word> that was similar to my post on the
<microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage> to which you responded.

Did you happen to download & apply the Apple Security Update 2007-005
two
days ago"?

The first suggestion is to run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions,
which
may be all that's necessary to resolve the issue. This really should
be done
both before [according to some sources] & after any OS X updates. If
you
still have problems follow what's offered here pertaining to
"Unexpected
Quit on StartUp":

http://word.mvps.org/mac/Diagnose.html

If necessary to reapply the OS X 10.4.9 update make sure to download
the
COMBO Updater from the Apple site. .

I probably did download Apple Security Update 2007-005 about two days
ago, about the same time that I started getting the error messages.

I'll try "Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions" and let you know
what happens.

This tells you the problem is system wide. If the combo updater does not fix
your problem, then you will need to do an Archive & Install.

Both Entourage
and Word were working perfectly until two days ago.

Think back through the last week - have you installed any software or
made other changes to your system in that time?
