Microsoft Exchange Server settings slowness

When entering my companies exchange server name the setup
changes it from XYZ to XYZ.xxxx (inserting the letters
after the dot.
Why is this ?
I am having slow connection speed when opening Outlook
2003 and am wondering if this is the issue.
