Microsoft Exchange

Hi I have Word 2000 I am trying to use my windows address
book for letters and mail merg, but when I click on add
book I get error message (you need to be log on to
microsoft exchange). What is this and on do I log on?

IN essence, you see this message because you are not using the full Outlook
or another address book that works with a thing called "MAPI". The message
should really say "MAPI" instead of "Exchange", but is a leftover from the
days before Outlook when Microsoft's e-mail program was called Exchange.
Although Microsoft's email server product is still called Exchange Server,
that doesn't really have anything to do with this problem.

Mailmerge cannot connect directly to the Windows Address Book. The only
straightforward way to use the Windows Address Book as a data source for a
merge is to open the Address Book and export the addresses to a text file
and use that as the data source for the merge.

Thanks Peter how about if I just wont to use the address
book for a letter, I have Outlook Express and works7 the
address book links and works fine in these applications,
can I not get it to work in Word with out loading Outlook?

The version(s) of Works that have Word as their Word processor usually have
a different approach to mailmerge than "regular" Word - in essence, you
choose mailmerge from somewhere in the main Works menu, and Works gets the
data and creates the merge document in Word. However, I don't know very much
about
a. which versions of Works uses that approach.
b. how it works in practice
c. whether you can make it work even if you installed Word separately from
Works. I think the necessary /converters/ to do it are avalable from the
Microsoft web site, but I do not know exactly where or whether that is
enough for your needs.
