microsoft image writer

In an educational setting, when Office 2003 was loaded it
sets the microsoft image writer printer as the default.
When students try to print, they cannot, because there is
no printer called microsoft image writer installed. I
can change to the default network printer, but the next
time anyone logs on, it again reverts to the "ghost
writer".
Can I turn it off? Delete it somehow? Get rid of that
default so students do not have to select the REAL
printer?
Thanks,

Hi RB

The MS Office Document Image Writer is an optional
install feature of MS Office 2003. In an individual
situation you could set it to 'not available' from
Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel
under Microsoft Office 2003 Features.

In a deployed situation you may want to create an
update using the Custom Maintenance Wizard tool from
the Office 2003 Resource Kit (http://microsoft.com/Office/ORK
and apply it as a 'blanket' change if you're not going to
be using that printer.

I've not seen it be selected as the default printer driver
except where there isn't another printer driver already
installed and selected. Word needs to have a printer selected
to have all its functions function.
