The first steps are to make sure you have Office fully updated (12.1.1) as
well as OS X (10.5.4), then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions. It
also won't hurt to restart your Mac.

If that doesn't resolve the problem come back with your results as well as
whether it is just the one file, whether you're saving to a network or
someplace other than your primary HD, etc.

I am now trying to install the updates but when it gets to the "destination select" section, it apppears that I can't install the update on this volume because a version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume. So what should I do now?

Thanks

If you've moved any of the Office files from there original locations or
deleted any portions of the Office stuff to make disk space available you'll
most likely need to remove & reinstall Office, but post back before you
attempt to do so - there are proven steps to take,

If you haven't done any of the above you can follow the suggestions on the
following page. That should work for you but post back if it doesn't:

I'm sorry, but unless you provide complete, specific & accurate details
there's little anyone can do to assist you. "it still won't let me"
discloses nothing of value.

Also, there was nothing in the previous replies which suggested reinstalling
Office. Doing so may very well have compounded the problem - especially if
you didn't use the Remove Office utility before doing so. Reinstalling is
rarely the appropriate solution on a Mac - applications & application
support files are not the ones causing the problems & the files that are
causing the problems don't get touched when reinstalling. When
reinstallation does need to be done there is a specific process which needs
to be followed in order to avoid complications.
