Microsoft Office 2001 - Menus Inoperative

All of a sudden my edit, view, insert, etc (only menu that opens is font)
are inoperative. They highlight but do not open/list. After about two
minutes I receive either a Type 2 or Type 3 error. I am Mac OS 9.2 user. I
have used Word, Excel, Powerpoint error free for more than five years. What
did I do? I do see a new command about "Voice or Speaking....." which I do
not know where they came from.
Problem arised after receiving a very slow opening Word document from a PC
user.

a few times...
