MICROSOFT OFFICE 2003 IN STARTUP

K

KIM

It seems to take forever to load/open my Microsoft Office 2003 documents???
I remember when I had Office 2000 there was 'Microsoft Office' in my STARTUP
Folder, did this help load/open my Office documents faster? Is this option
no longer available in Microsoft Office 2003 ? If it is still available in
Microsoft Office 2003, how do I activate it or get it into my STARTUP Folder?

Sorry, try telling us about the problem. When do documents open slow? Is
the application already open? Only when you double-click them in Windows
Explorer? Files on a network or local or both or only attachment? All
Office applications or just Word?

K

KIM

All my Microsoft Office 2003 applications load/open [launch] slow all the
time, except it is much faster when I have a similar application already
open. I use only a local drive.

Here is a fix I have used before to fix this issue

In Windows Explorer, click Tools Folder Options, File Types. For Word
documents highlight .doc extension and then click Advanced. Click Open
on the list, and then click Edit. replace /DDE with "%1" (use quotes) to
the end of the "Application used" box. And uncheck the DDE box. Now
test. If all is well, do the same for the Excel (.xls)

All my Microsoft Office 2003 applications load/open [launch] slow all the
time, except it is much faster when I have a similar application already
open. I use only a local drive.

There has to be a better way??? There used to be 'Microsoft Office' in my
STARTUP when I used Office 2000. Somehow this made Office run something in
the background that made it launch the Office applications faster??? Does
anyone know how or what I can add to my STARTUP to accomplish this since I
use Office application frequently and often?

What do you mean a "better way", do you want to fix the problem or not?
Up to you.

I'm not sure if that's the best solution for this specific situation. Part
of the purpose of DDE is to use the same instance of the application for
multiple files. When you turn if off then another instance of the
application will start. Since the OP is encountering a delay if the
application isn't already running, forcing another instance of the
application to start when opening a file outside the application may
ultimately cause even more of a delay.

Now, I can't say for sure, since I have no way to test this - all of my
files open without a delay, so I'm basing this on logic only. :)

That's just part of my standard signature. While you are accessing the
newsgroup on the Microsoft site, the newsgroups are part of Usenet which can
be accessed by various web sites and newsreaders, such as Outlook Express.
Newsreaders include the option to "Reply to Author" which will send an email
to me instead of replying to the group. My note is a reminder to ask any
follow-up questions in the newsgroup instead of emailing me directly. Doing
so benefits everyone and the person with the follow-up question. It could be
hours and sometimes days before I could respond to an email but by posting
to the newsgroup others can answer their questions and on one is waiting on
me. :)

Sorry, I found the fix a long time ago, in the MS KBs. Seem it was for
Word 2002, but I found it worked for 2003 also, and used it 3 or 4
months ago to fix my installation. I didn't analyze it to see how it
worked, as it was only a minor edit in the file type handler. it was
worth a shot. It worked, that's all I know.

In your Windows startup folder, which is usually something like
"C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup", add
a shortcut to the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\OSA.exe"
file. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826318 "Frequently asked
questions about the Office Startup Assistant in the 2007 Office suites
and in Office 2003" for more information.

Thank you very much for your help and info!!!
Was "Osa.exe or OSA" the same as was used with Office 2000?
I remember the 'Startup Folder' having something like "Microsoft Office" in
it???
This was automatically added when I installed Microsoft Office 2000!!!

J

JDoe

I've been reading this thread. I looked for osa.exe in my MS Office Small
Business 2003 and cannot find it after a "search" on my C drive. Where do I
acquire osa.exe to place a shortcut in my "C:\Documents and
Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" to facilitate a quicker
loading/opening of MS Office documents?

Thanks for your anticipated response.

K

KIM

I added a shortcut for the OSA.exe file to my Startup folder like you
mentioned and don't notice any difference in the speed of launching my Office
2003 applications??? I found this link
http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/osa.exe.html which states that
"Some users claim there's no difference with or without OSA.exe in the
Startup folder"??? Does it take longer to launch Office 2003 applications
than it did to launch Office 2000 applications? It seems like the pop-up
window that tells me which application is being launched is displayed on my
screen for over 6 seconds??? That seems like it is much longer than it was
displayed in earlier versions???

K

KIM

JDoe: Do a search in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11" or just
the folder "Office11", that is where I found it!!!
