Can I simply delete my old copy of Office X by dragging its folder in the Applications directory to the trash after installing the new 2008 version? Any other files elsewhere that need to be trashed?
Have you already installed Office 2008? It should find Office X and
offer to remove it for you. Otherwise for the most part, you should
be able to drag the folder to the trash. There are a few preference
files also in other directories, but they are small and generally
should not harm anything leaving them around.
