Microsoft Office 2010?

Nick

Hello,

I am a to-be university student come this September, and wanted to upgrade
to Office Home and Student 2007, particularly for OneNote 2007. My question
is: Will there be a new version of Office Home and Student anytime soon? ...
I'd rather wait a new more months for the newer one, if possible. Many thanks
for the help.

Regards,

Nick

There will be a new version but not before you start school. I haven't heard
an official release date yet but I suspect it'll be in the first quarter of
2010.

Hi JoAnn,

About the release date, someone on the message boards named "Expert" gave me
this link: http://www.office2010themovie.com/. So, does this mean that
Microsoft will release Office 2010 on July 1, 2009? Thanks again.

No, definitely not. I believe that's the day they start the technical
preview, not the day when it's released for sale to the general public.

Hi Beth,

So, what would you recommend? Should I purchase Office Home and Student 2007
(I need it for my university courses that begin on September 1), would I be
able to get some "deal" if Office 2010 were to come out, say, three months
later? ... I can't really wait past the aforementioned date. I thank you for
your time and help.

Do yourself the favor and buy the 2007 version now. Even if it does come out
in three months I think you will find that your school will not support it
yet and that it *will* have issues. (I wish that part wasn't going to happen
but we all know better. New software has bugs and those bugs will happen
when you can least afford the time to correct them.)

If you need Office for school then get the H&S 2007 edition. Rumor has it,
the retail version of Office 2010 isn't set to be released until sometime
the first half of the year. But those are rumors. It could be released in
December 2010 for all we know. Plus I doubt the university you are attending
will be upgrading to Office 2010 the day it's released. It usually takes
several months for them to make the change.

Typically if you purchase Office and soon after your purchase it a newer
version of Office is released they provide some type of accommodation for
this situation.

Hi Beth,

Thanks for the helpful reply. Yes, after reading around on the internet, it
does appear that the new Office should be released around December. Still, it
does feel unwise to purchase Office 2007 when I'll know there's a newer
(better?) one coming out soon. Plus, it is quite pricy, too. Thanks again.

JoAnn,

So, in other words, I should purchase Office 2007, and wait a few months
after release of Office 2010 to give Microsoft the time to fix the inevitable
"bugs." Correct? Seems like a good idea, but spending $150.00 (CAN) twice
does hurt the wallet. I'm guessing there will be no "special" if I buy Office
2007 and 2010 comes out, say, 6 months later? Thanks.

There's always upgrade pricing that's substantially lower than buying for
the first time--although I don't know if that will be the case for the Home
& Student version. As far as I know, pricing for 2010 has not been
announced.

You could wait for the 2020 version of Office, but by then, maybe it would
make sense to wait for the 2024 version, etc. There's never a perfect time
to jump on board the train... you never know for sure until you've missed
it.

Few months? The company where I work is still using Office 2003 and is still
waffling about rolling out Office 2007 at the end of this year. We also
still use Win XP Pro and IE 6.

You're leaving out part of the equation:

Do you *need* Office 2007 now? What's it cost you not to have it?

If it costs you a client, then $150 bucks to get it now seems pretty cheap.

If it costs you the ability to use the new glows in PowerPoint and you don't do
much PowerPoint, $150 is pretty stiff.

So, in other words, I should purchase Office 2007, and wait a few months
after release of Office 2010 to give Microsoft the time to fix the inevitable

You can buy OneNote standalone for $100 from MS, less from Amazon and the like.

And for that matter, if you're going to be a student, you may well be eligible for a
special Office price through your university. Some of them offer *very* good
pricing.
