Microsoft Office Beta TR Question.

I had read about the Office Beta TR version now available for download. I
have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system. My OS is Windows XP2 with
all the updates. When Office 2007 Beta was released, before I downloaded I
asked if it was going to conflict with my Office 2003 if I installed it on a
different hard drive. I was told it would not. I downloaded and installed
Office 2007 Beta on my G drive and have not encountered any problems between
using the two application.

Now I keep reading about the Office 2007 TR. Before downloading and
installing, I decided to come to the forum to see what problems and issues us
testers were encountering. For those of you who downloaded and installed the
TR version, would you advise installing the TR version on the same G Drive,
and is it going to conflict with my Office 2003. Right now, I can use either
application (not at the same time) and everything works just fine. Once and
a while, I get an error message, send it off to Microsoft, but basically I
have not encountered any major errors like files not opening, operating
errors, memory allocation error, etc. I have not to reboot my system because
of the beta version. Even my ZoneAlarm Security Suite is working with the
Office 2007 beta. However, I am relunctant to install the TR version because
I have read about compatibiity or conflict problems. Exactly what does this
TR version do to improve the performance of the beta version? I also am
beta-testing the Web Designer and Graphics Designer application and not
experiencing any problems with them either. Any suggestions?

I downloaded TR yesterday and can't get to any of my files in Excel or Word.
It comes up with an error saying my antivirus software is blocking it. It
said that I would have to get an update from my antivirus software. I'm
running Norton, did an update and am still having the same problem I didn't
have time to try and figure it out yesterday. I went back to XP Office and
had no problems getting to the Excel and Word files. At this point I would
say don't download.

Me again. I read further down on Office 2007 B2TR problems and found my
solution. I turned off Norton Office Plug In and everything seems to be
working just fine.

Hi, I have the same problem with the files.
How do you turn off Norton Office Plug In?

thanks,

The Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh Update is not a standalone version, it is a patch update to MS Office 2007 Beta2, so there
isn't a drive selection decision point in this case.

The MS Expression products will need to be updated versions as well (MS Expression Web shares some DLL files with Office 2007).

Dear Sir,

Thank you for the information. I do not use Norton because I had problems
two year ago with that program. I realize major changes have been corrected
in Norton, but now I have used ZoneAlarm Security Suite and encountered no
problems whatsoever with any of the application on my system. Your
recommendation was very helpful. Still ponder on whether to download the TR,
though. Waiting for me input.

Dear Mr. Buckland:

Thank you for your response. I knew the TR was not a standalone version.
That was not my question. I wanted to know who was having problems, what
beta-testers were thinking, and who was having conflicts with the various
anti-virus, anti-spyware, and software firewall applications. Prior to
posting my questions, I had already read several post on who was encountering
problems. I am still pondering on whether to download and install the TR
because right now I am experiencing minor inconviences. All of the problem
posts I have read about I have not had. My Office 2007 is working just fine
and my Microsoft Office 2003 is working just fine. I can open all my 2003
files in the beta version. I can open all my files I create in the Office
2007 beta version and saved in the 2003 format and open them in any of the
Microsoft Office 2003 version. Right now I have a "if it can broke, why fix
it" dilemna. That is why I posted my questions. Any futher suggestions or
comments?

I went to Options in Norton, clicked Other, and Miscellaneous. Just uncheck
the Office Plug In.

Updating any software involves some risk that it may conflict with something else. It's one of the reasons to always do a backup
before updating.

Office 2007 Beta 2 with or without the technical refresh update is still pre-release (unfinished) software, so you may encounter
problems, but you may not. It could depend on a very specific sequence of events or usage needs. Folks don't often drop by the
newsgroups just to say how well things are going <g>, but the final decision on what's best for your spirit of adventure vs 'what I
have is doing what I need today' is a personal one for you to make :)

You should be able to continue to open and save all of the Office 2007 beta 2 .---X files, but if you have ones from an even earlier
beta version then those files you'd want to resave in legacy (.doc, .xls, etc) file format before upgrading to B2TR.

You may lose and need to redo customizations to the Quick Access Toolbar or the Building Blocks (themes, autotext) areas when
updating to B2TR. You do gain an extended use/testing period. Beta 2 expires 01Feb2007. B2TR expires 31Mar07.

Dear Mr. Buckland:

Thank you for your comment. This is a great deal in my decision on whether
or not to install TR. I still have to check the comments and suggestion from
the ZoneAlarm Security Suite Forum before install the TR. I am going to
download it, but possibly install it over the weekend.

I already realize there will be problems when installing and using a beta
version of any software application. This why it is call beta, as you
pointed out. I have used computers since 1985 and understand why software
companies have beta testing to fix as many problems the public might
encounter. It is a wise business decision, otherwise, software companies
will be refunding the some of their profits.(smile) So far I am thrilled
with this is newly about to be released version.
