Microsoft Office Notifications Does Not Produce Alert Sound

In Office 2004 I no longer receive the alert sound when saving a
file,e.g., Word or Excel. It worked fine in Office X.

The Microsoft Office Notifications is set to On for both Office
Notifications and Sounds. I tired toggling it Off and then On but it
didn't help.

Any ideas?

This seems to be a common occurrence and there doesn't seem to be a
sure-fire fix. I've fought this for years and given up. I'm guessing that
a preference file gets corrupted. Deleting them only helps for a short
while.

Anyone else have a new cure?!
