Microsoft Office Outlook does not recognize "". (OL 2007)

J

Jim

I have several "Distribution Lists" set up in my Outlook 2007 Contacts. When
I press "Send" to send an e-mail to any of the Distribution Lists (without
clicking on the "+" sign next to the Distribution List name in the "To..."
Field to expand the Distribution List to the names on the list) I get an
error message in a popup window name Check Names that says, "Microsoft Office
Outlook does not recognize ""." In other words, somehow Oulook thinks that
there is a null entry ("") in the list of addressees and it does not
recognize that. There is no null entry anywhere in any of the Distribution
Lists as far as I can see. If I Press "Cancel" in the pop-up window Outlook
proceeds to send the message.

If (before clicking on Sent) I click on the "+" sign next to the
Distribution List name in the "To..." Field to expand the Distribution List
to the names on the list, I get the "helpful" message: "If you expand the
list, Outlook will replace the
list with its members. You will not be able to collapse it again." There is
a box to check to discontinue issuance of that warning. If I press "OK" and
then press Send, I do not get the error message, "Microsoft Office Outlook
does not recognize ""."

Any suggestions (besides just living with these "features")?

Hard to say since you did not specify how you are selecting the DL as a
recipient.

Thanks for the reply.

I select the Distribution List as a recipient by typing the first few
letters of the Distribution List name into the "To...." field. AutoComplete
presents several choices (in the case of my list name) as a pull-down menu,
and I click on the name of the list I want. Outlook then puts the name of the
Distribution List into the "To..." field with a [+] box in front of it,
indicating that it is a Distribution List and not a single recipient.

Do not use autocomplete to select a DL. Select it from the Outlook Address
Book instead. Autocompletion entries for DL's become corrupt all the time.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I get the same result if I use the Address Book to select a
Distribution List, and the same problem occurs with every Distribution List.
That is, when I press "Send" I get an error message in a popup window named
Check Names that says, "Microsoft Office Outlook does not recognize ""."

However, if I expand the list to display all the names in the list, the
problem does not occur. But when you do that, you get a message, "If you
expand the list, Outlook will replace the list with its members. You will not
be able to collapse it again." There is a box in that pop-up to tell Outlook
to not remind me of this again, which I have checked.

So I guess I'll just try to remember to expand the list before pressing
Send. It's not too inconvenient of a workaround.

Shall I assume that at one point these DL's worked as expected? If so, can
you remember the steps produced this change in behavior? DL's are very
fragile and get damaged or corrupted very easily. Have you tried to open and
save a DL to restore its resolution?

I have deleted all of the AutoComplete entries and the problem persists.

I have opened and saved the DL (both as "Save" and "Save and Close") and the
problem persists.

I don't use DL's that often, but I just this week set one up to temporarily
send some mail to the same person at two different e-mail addresses (without
having to enter the two addresses separately). When the problem occurred I
checked to see if there is anything weird in the DL, and finding nothing
weird, I checked performance with some other DLs on my computer and I got the
same results for all of them.

As I think back, I think that this problem has occurred as long as I've had
this Vista / Office 2007 computer. I think that it also occurs all the time
with my old XP / Office 2003 computer at home. (I'll check that tonight.)
Since I don't use DLs that often I just always assumed that I had an
erroneous entry in my list and I ignored the problem. However, when I
started using this current DL extensively and problem is persistent I decided
to check into it.

Thanks for your help on this, Russ, but I don't think it's worth spending
any more time on it - unless some other users report the same problem.
