there could be a number
of reasons for the problem
but it is best to work/modify
copies of the files and keep
the originals in tact and some
where safe.
--------
what you might try
is tuning up your disk.
if your disk is "heavily"
fragmented,
then those files and others
are scattered all over the
disk.
a single file that you see
on the display may actual
be a file comprised of dozens
of tiny fragments.
so if one fragment gets
corrupted, the rest of the
fragments for that file
will be lost too.
so be sure to defrag your
disk.
another problem could
be that the master file table
needs to be reconciled with
the files on the disk.
files can become unindexed
and will not be on the master
file table.
however, the files may still
be on the disk.
to reconcile the master file
table, you will need to run
a chkdsk or a chkdsk /p
from the recovery console.
my other suggestions
are to ensure the computer
is dedicated to working
on the pics only.
so close all unnecessary
programs, disconnect from
the internet and close your
anti virals while working
on the pics.
lastly, use a different
graphics program.
if you are using the picture
manager included in office,
its time to upgrade to a
more reliable version.
