Microsoft Office product key incorrect

I bought a toshiba lap top and used a hard disk back up to copy over my files.
I installed microsoft 2007 separately and did not put in the product key.
I later tried to enter the product key and was told it was incorrect even
though this is the key that is on the office packaging. Any ideas what I am
doing wrong?

Did your Tosh have a trial version of Office installed, that you failed to
uninstall first?
