In trying to install Microsoft Office Professional 2007 with Business Contact
Manager, I have spent all day installing, uninstalling, repairing, updating,
casting spells, praying, and throwing salt over my shoulder to no avail.
Short of using the salt for Margaritas, I'm at my wits end. I've seen dozens
of posts about similar problems but none seem to have the same error messages
and symptoms as I do. Here is the scenario in a nutshell, albeit, a large
nutshell.
My new Acer Aspire 5520-5142 came with Vista Home Premium and a trial
version of Microsoft Office. My trial version of Office was nearing it's end
and I needed Biz-Contact-Mng for my business so I bought an OEM version of
the afore mentioned Office online and tried to install it today.
It should be noted that I updated to Vista SP1 several days ago using
Windows Automatic Updates and have had no unusual problems until today.
My first problem may have been self inflicted as I failed to uninstall the
trial version of Office, thinking that the new installation would recognize
it and tell me it was going to uninstall it before installing the new
version. This didn't happen and when I started getting the error messages I
uninstalled both versions and started clean. The results were always the same.
1) Installing from both CDs goes well. Office is installed and then BCMng is
installed. All seems well until I go to register the BCMng and then all hell
breaks loose.
2) Suddenly a large pop-up window opens telling me to please wait while
Office configures itself. So I wait....and wait...and wait...
3) When it finishes another, smaller window opens telling me Office is
preparing to install Microsoft Office Professional Hybrid 2007. When this
finishes I get a message telling me that I need to reboot to start the
process.
4) Upon trying to reboot I get a message saying:
"Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. this can occur if the
Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel
for assistance."
As I'm self employed and work out of my home with a simple wireless home
network, I AM my support personnel. So now I'm outsourcing to this forum
hoping for some badly needed help.
5) I click the option to shut down whatever's pretending to be running and
reboot and before the system shuts down I get a message saying "Thank you for
registering." Your welcome.
6) If I try to cancel out of the Office configuration I get a pop up that
offers me the options of going online for update solutions and closing the
program, just closing the program, or debugging the program. On my first
installation I got the 7 updates from Microsoft's site but they did nothing
to prevent the problem then or in the future. If I try to just close or debug
the program it's a never ending cycle of Digital Groundhog Day.
7) At points near the end of this process (I simply can't remember exactly
where) I am told that the required DLL cannot be found in my path. There were
two different DLLs missing (only one per installation). They were:
RTFHTML.DLL and OUTLRPC.DLL.
And to conclude this novel, I will paste the text from the details of two of
my failed attempts.

I'll close by saying that I've actually been pleasantly surprised by my lack
of problems with Vista. NOT that I haven't had them but it has not been the
depression causing, lobotomy seeking, ordeal I thought it would be.....until
now. ANY help will be greatly appreciated!
