"Microsoft Office Setup Bootstrapper has encountered a problem and needs to close" ???!

I get this when I try to install Office XP pro on a new Toshiba
Portege 2010 laptop with Windows XP Pro pre-installed. If I try to
install using PROPLUS.MSI I get past the first few installation
screens, then it crashes at the "preparing to install" stage
("Installation ended prematurely because of an error").

Just prior to attempting this I had mistakenly tried to install Office
2000 Premium instead (I assume that this isn't compatible with XP
Pro?). I'm not sure if this had any effect on things.

Has anyone seen this message before, or does could anyone suggest
anything to try?
