H ow do I permanently get rid of subject toolbar?
I can hide it, but I don't want it on my desktop.

IIRC right-clicking on it gives you access to toolbar preferences, but you
can also either uninstall it using Office setup, or remove the item from the
Windows Start menu's Startup folder.
