Microsoft Office v. X for Mac Security update 10.1.6

Tried to install Microsoft Office v. X for Mac Security update 10.1.6.
Installer froze with spinning beach ball. Upon system restart trying to
open any application causes a spinning beach ball. I have repaired
permissions, run /sbin/fsck -fy. System will restart and everything
looks good until I try to click on any application or the finder.

Any ideas other than reinstalling the entire system?

Note: The only updater you now need for Office X is 10.1.6. All previous
ones are included.
Thanks for the reply. My problem is that I am unable to click on any
icon in the dock or the finder without getting a spinning beach ball. I
have to do a hard restart just to get rid of the spinning beach ball. I
am unable to use the Office X CD with the remove Office tool, because it
just causes a spinning beach ball when I click on it. I was finally able
to eject the CD during the hard restart.

I have repaired the disc, repaired permissions (both twice), performed
/sbin/fsck -f from the single user mode (no errors noted).

When the system reboots, I get my normal desktop. It takes a long time
for the system to reboot. My guess is that 10.1.6 is now causing kernel
panics behind the scene. Any ideas?

Hi Douglas,

These are the options that I see (and hopefully someone else will come up
with something better):

1. Do a restart. You probably already tried this but sometimes it's easy
to overlook the obvious.

2. In case the Disk Utility tool is also compromised (rare but possible),
try this:

Open the Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities).  Type ³sudo diskutil
repairPermissions /² (without quotes and note the space before the slash). 
When prompted, enter your administrator password and don¹t be disconcerted
that you don¹t see anything as you¹re typing.  When the procedure is
complete, quit the Terminal.

3. Try a disk repair app (Disk Warrior from Alsoft and/or TechTool Pro from
Micromat) if you can get one to install/work.

4. Try the help boards at MacFixit.com

5. Call Apple.

6. Reinstall the system (sorry).
