Microsoft Office Word has stopped Working

P

Preacher Man

Anytime I try to close Word I get "Microsoft Office Word has stopped Working"
and I have noticed that I can not use my mouse in the Word document I can
use my scroll to scroll the page up and down, but I can not high light or
move curser using mouse.

How do I fix this without reinstalling?? I am at home and the problem is at
my desk top, and I think my CD is at my room at the job site. It will be a
week before I can get it back here.

Thank you,

Edward

Reinstalling will do nowt. This is an incompatible third party add-in
messing with Word. Check your add-ins - usually as templates in the Word
Startup folder. Remove them all and test that Word is now OK. Then add them
back one at a time until you find the culprit.

Well you can start by eliminating Word itself by starting it in Safe Mode
which by[asses all add-ins, templates, customisations, starting Word in it
clean default install condition. From Start, Run (Winkey+R) type in

winword /a

and press enter. Test now and Word should be working correctly but without
any customisations you may have done. Try restarting Word.

Word will not run correctly if the printer driver is missing or corrupt, or
if there is a third party add-in that is corrupt or incompatible trying to
load at startup. You should check that you have the latest printer driver
from the manufacturer's support site and then delete and reinstall the
printer.

Most third party add-ins are done by installing a template in the Word
Startup folder. Locate the folder and rename any template add-ins by
renaming them xxxx.BAD. Test Word and see if it starts. If it does, then
change the templates back to xxxx.dot one at a time testing each in turn.

Any chance you could explain exactly how to do that? I'm frustrated
beyond
belief!

Thanks for the suggestions.

winword /a works just fine.

I have only one template, and renaming it makes no difference.

It doesn't refuse to start all of the time, just about 75%. The rest
of the time, it works perfectly. Given that, I don't see how it could
be a printer driver.

The registry edits I've seen suggested several other places don't make
any difference either.

Any other ideas?

I just tried making another printer (different driver) the default,
and that didn't make any difference either.

Never mind! I found the culprit -- Scansoft's PDF Create! 4. I
uninstalled it, and everything's fine now.

Excellent news. It is nearly always an incompatible third party add-in that
causes these problems.
