"Microsoft Office Word has stopped working"

Hi,

I have Vista Ultimate with Office 2003 and MS CRM. I have been using this
laptop for many months and never had any issue with office. We have just
installed CRM and still having some issues with it though I don’t think it
got anything to do with Word. I did install adobe pdf professional and when
Word stopped working I uninstalled it but word still does not work.

Whenever I try to open any word document I get the error "Microsoft Office
Word has stopped working"

I looked into some of Terry Farrell post on the same issue and so far tried
below options without any luck:

Editing reg on user and local machine from dada, options and addins to
olddata, old options and oldaddins respectively.

However nothing works.

I can start the word in safe mode.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks Terry,

Unfortunately, there is no addins in Tools>Templates & addins. The box is
empty.

Also under Tools>options>file location>Modify and it modified it to STARTUP\
but still word does not work.

Is there any way to wind out what is wrong?

Thank you

May be a COM add-in. Have you eliminated bad printer driver or partially
corrupt normal.dot?

How do find bad comm in / bad printer driver or a normal.dot file?
Unfortunately all of your help guides are for XP, not for vista.

I searched for normal.dot but did not find anything.

Do you think unstalling and installing office again would help?

thanks, once again!

OK I do not have any global template or any COM add-ins. I checked it as per
the link in your post.

You MUST have a global template (normal.dot or dotm). Have you set Windows
Explorer to show Hidden Files & Folders and System Files?

Have you got a local printer driver installed and set as the system default?

I do have a normal template in word. But this the only one I have. It is
under “Document Template†however I do not have anything under “Global
Templates and Add-Innsâ€.

I have four printers in my printer folder in control panel. Default printer
is Xerox work center that is on TCP/IP port. It is on the office network.
Second one is Microsoft XP document write which is on local port (XPS local
port). Third one is Microsoft Imaging Writer and it’s on local port too.
Fourth one is fax. I have never used anything other than Xerox printer.

Does it help to resolve the problem?

Thanks

Is the Xerox printer driver locally installed?

Have you checked in the Word Startup folder?

Word start up folder is empty.

I do not know if Xerox printer driver is installed locally. How can i check?
Xerox printer port is TCP/IP. This machine is a tablet and I access our
office network and printer thru wireless.

I am not sure if this help, however I amin really big trouble since I use
word for most of my jobs.

I suggest that you find out from IT support at work about the printer. But
Word must have a locally installed printer driver set as the Windows default
to work correctly.

Thanks Terry,

I will ask our IT guy but I doubt he would know as he find every solution
just by gollging the problem and our CRM support would noot cover it.

Also just wanted to let you know that word opens in safe mode and also with
/a switch.

Both those modes bypass the printer driver (along with Normal.dot, the
Registry, and add-ins), so that just proves that one of those is the
problem. If you have no printer driver installed locally, then the printer
will be the problem.

I do not have any add-ins, I have only one normal template, I have tried
almost all the options with registry and still word does not work fine.

Is there any way to find out whether printer is installed locally or remote
from printer properties?
Thanks

I have tried eveything but somehow Word does not work, checked all addins,
templates and even repaired / reinstalled the whole office 2003.

Looks like I have to work without word now or use in a switch which is pain
in the butt. I lost full functionality in outlook too as word was default
editer.

Is CRM patched fully up to date? If so, uninstall CRM and I bet Word will
work.

Thanks for the reply Terry.

I just got CRM in working condition after 40 hours of work. We might be
installing it again since our current MS certified CRM aalyst did not know
much about the CRM nad we had to hire another one. Our CRM is updated and we
have installed and uninstalled it many times already.

I just dont understand why one MS product (CRM) would create problem for
another MS product (Word).

And also how come there is no help available? Every single IT guy is just
searching the web for solutions.

Terry,

I have the same problem, but Office 2007 Home and Student on Vista Home
premium x32.

When open Windows via winword /a, I still get the windows crash when I try
to open a file.

I found one place on the net that said this was the fault of Norton AV, and
to disable the Office extensions for real-time protection. I did that, no
help.

I found another note on the Microsoft support site that told me about a
particular registry key (ends in /Data - don't have my notes handy) to
delete. i deleted it. No help.

Yet another note suggested deleting normal.dot and let it be recreated. Did
that. No help.

I even uninstalled office. I went into regedit and removed every reference
to MS Office that was left. Rebooted, defragged my regsitry, rebooted, and
re-installed. No help.

I have no idea what else to try other than to follow another user's advice
and load openoffice and return MS Office for a refund.

Any other suggestions?

Have you followed this FAQ?
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm

It may be your have a partially corrupt or out of date printer driver (Word
must have a locally installed printer driver set as the Windows default to
work correctly).

Finally, I assume this happens on ALL documents including creating a new
document from the blank on opening?

Yes, I have followed that FAQ with no success.

If I start Word by double-clicking on a Word-document filename, Word opens
and works okay. I can even save the document. If I double-click another
document and have two open at the same time, I cannot save either one, as I
get the Word has stopped responding error when the file save dialogue opens.

If I start Word by itself, it opens fine to a blank document. I can type,
edit, etc. but when I go to save it, Word stops responding.

If I open Word by itself, with the blank document open, and try to open a
different document, Word stops responding.

There is a local printer attached, with an up-to-date driver.

These problems began suddenly in early October and started with Office XP.
The suggestions then were to get the newest version since Office XP wasn't
supported. So, I went and bought Office 2007 Home and Student on Black
Friday. I completely uninstalled Office XP before installing Office 2007. The
same problems continue with Office 2007. I have not even attempted to see if
this same problem occurs with other Office applications yet, as Word is what
is used virtually 100% of the time. This installation is at my church, and
I'm trying to get them back up and running.
