Microsoft Office XP Pro: Outlook problem

1. Backing up outlook by creating a pst file, at the end of the backup I
receive a message that that the backup failed. Although there is a pst file
on my backup drive but perhaps not complete.
2. Tried to repair and re-install from the original disc and the product key
is no longer recognized. I wondered if this was a result of numerous security
updates and service pack 2 etc.

Many thanks for your help.

A repair or reinstall of Outlook is going to do nothing for the data files.
To backup an OL data file it is merely neccessary to copy it some other
location, with outlook closed
If you are using the free MS OL backup add-in the backup will fail unless OL
has completely exited first. The backup add-in overwrites any existing
backup.
A Detect/Repair from OL help is all thats needed to repair OL

Thank you, I was using outlook "import and export" in the file menu to create
a pst file and store that on my back up drive. It was at the end of the
process that I received the failure notice. I hadn't had that problem before.
Should I not be backing up this way or is there another problem? Many thanks
for your help.
