Microsoft Office XP Professional version 2002

Hi, My question is, I just purchased this software brand
new at a computer show near where I live. Software is
Microsoft Office XP Professional version 2002, There are 2
cd cases, the one cd case has 2 cd's in it labeled
Microsoft Office XP Professional, the othe cd case has one
cd in it labeled Microsoft Office XP interactive
training. Both cd's came shrink wrapped, but notice all
the writing on the cd's until I got them home which states
as follows: "NOT FOR RETAIL OR OEM DISTRIBUTION"
& "UNLICENSED SOFTWARE - Illegal without separate license
from Microsoft.". What does this mean and how do I go
about getting the license from Microsoft to make this
software LEGAL????

Thanks for your time
Mark

I sincerely hope you didn't pay more than a few £s for it as what you have
there is part of an Open Licence or Volume Licence distribution. This is a
version sold to businesses through MS's OL/VL Agreement and is not for
distribution outside of the licencee(s). Basically what you've purchased is
a couple of nice, shiny coasters. When you call MS you will probably be told
you will need to purchase the full retail version - unless, of course, you
have a qualifying product. As I've never been in possession of an OL/VL
copy, does it have an installation key? If so, you can be sure it won't
activate.

What can you do about it? Not much, really, unless the show is still on, in
which case you can go and kick up a stink with the person who sold it. If
that gets you nowhere, your next course of action is (e-mail address removed).
Whilst this won't get you a refund, it will alert MS to the fact that
there's an unscrupulous dealer selling what are, in effect, pirated copies
of Office and they can, and do, take action against these people. The
penalty for piracy is a up to a $500,000 fine and/or a jail sentence of up
to 10 years, I believe.
