Microsoft outlook as default

I have tried to make outlook my defalt email, from express. I got the message
'export could not be performed your defalt MAPI could not be opened' Hmm...
any ideas?

Sounds like you haven't yet properly configured a mail profile.

From within Outlook Express, you cannot make Outlook the default e-mail
client. From within Outloook Express, you can only select that it
checks it is the default mail client (when you load Outlook Express) or
not to check. You cannot have it select some other e-mail program to
use as the default.

And WHEN did you get that message? When you loaded Outlook, perhaps? I
thought a wizard came up if you have not yet created a mail profile but
perhaps not in your case. Use the Mail applet in Control Panel to
create a mail profile. You can also use the Mail applet to define an
e-mail account that Outlook can use.

I doubt Outlook would be exporting anything the first time you load it.
So just WHEN did you get that error message? Exactly WHAT were you
doing to make that error message (which is not the exact message as
shown here) to appear?

Control Panel -> Mail.

Control Panel -> Internet Options -> tab Programs to specify your
default mail client.

version.

You then uninstalled an older version of Office (which was from what you
upgraded).

Well, you removed component files that the upgrade relies upon when you
later uninstalled the old version. Uninstall the old version and then
install the new upgrade. Or just do the upgrade which gives you the new
version. If you upgrade, the old version should no longer be listed in
Add/Remove Programs. If instead you did a parallel install to test the
new version, only one version of Outlook can be installed at a time on
the host (verus Word that can have multiple versions installed). When
you then uninstalled the old version, files that were shared by both
versions got deleted.

Phew, how can I sort out this mess I've created? should I start from
scratch, uninstall office altogether then re-install it? can it be sorted?

That is what I figured. Uninstall all instances of Office in the
*reverse* order of how you installed them. Then install the latest
version. If it is an upgrade and asks for verification or location of
the prior version's files, I assume that it is sufficient to insert the
install CD for the prior version and have the setup look there. What
you do depends on whether you have an upgrade or full version to install
for the latest version of Office.

as you suggest and then reinstall it.
